Wrote... Hi: I grew up in Berlin with my parents and 11 brothers and sisters. My father was a borough councilman, and later my brother the chief of police. In my opinion there has never been a better place to grow up. When I look back at the innocense of the 50's I feel sad that our children and grandchildren can not experience it also. I remember Berlin Park and free swim until 2PM each day. The stone bath house, the wooden refreshment pavalion, softball games every nite in the spring and summer, and the Red Cross swimming lessons. The July 4th parade, fireworks, beauty pagent, games, greased poll, pie eating contest. How wonderful you felt after the fireworks if you were a teenager, and got to go to the dance in the old grange hall at the front of the park.(Now a small shopping plaza)
We walked everywhere, and never thought to ask our parents to drive us. It was a great place to grow up. I miss many of these things and places like Myers Drug store, Silverman's 5 & 10, Bepels Berlin Bakery, and the LaRoss shop.
Even though there are many changes, the small town atmosphere is still here, and lifelong friends and family will always make Berlin my home no matter where I may live. Thanks for the opportunity to visit this wonderful web site. You have done a great job.

But for all those "REAL BERLINERS" its call the "AUCTION" for the rest of the world its the Berlin Farmers Market. It will be real nice if and when you get the pictures up and running. I have been fortunate enough to see some of the old pics of Berlin. And I am proud to say that I am from Berlin, NJ. Stay safe and healthy.

Wrote... I was born and raised in Berlin, NJ. My dad was one of 2 shoe repairmen (his name was Matt, too) and my mom (Josephine) worked in Philadelphia. Berlin was a sleepy little town with many fine people. I remember the Silvermans and their 5 and 10. Lucien Fleche had one of the finest restaurants on the East coast (The Old Tavern) and Timmy Maier was one of the best pharmacists in the state! People came and went, but the town was always the same...the old swimming hole back at the Park and the great 4th of July parades. The LaRose Gift shop brought back memories, although the business is no longer there (but the building is). I suppose I could go on and on, but I believe that Berlin was a good place to be raised in. I always enjoy passing through and going to the Farmer;s Market. Oh, well, they were the good old days!!!

Wrote... Hello Just surfed on your web site.
My father and Grandfathers Hotel/Store was in Hazlet, NJ with a well and a black smith shop and stables, & barns.
Only three barns still exist on the site of "SWARTZEL's Farm & Garden" today.
Shame the four story Hazlet Hotel is gone. Had a bar in the basement for travelers whom stayed overnight. Most bed rooms were heated by pot belly stoves excluding the forth floor. The Floor boards were some 12" wide pine.
Recent 4th of July visit to the Rahway Drovers Hotel brought back memories of my dads store.
All that historic Hazlet NJ history is lost but there is still time for an Historical Dig around the Black Smith Shop that was on Holmdel Road near the train stop. The book "History of Hazlet, NJ"; has photos of the old Swartzel Property.
Hope someone cares to check out a small piece of NJ History in the near future.
Thank you
Karl
